4 Tips for Persevering When Studying

Need to study? Here are some tips to help you persevere when the going gets tough.

1. Learn How to Study

It’s easier to persevere if you are using efficient methods to study. For example, did you know that just reading a textbook doesn’t even count as studying? To truly master a subject, you need active engagement with the material. Write flash cards with key facts, draw up a chapter outline, summarize your lectures, and discuss ideas with your teachers and classmates. The more you engage with material, the easier it will be to remember.

2. Eat Well and Exercise

No matter what you are trying to accomplish, persevering is easier if you are well-nourished and get regular exercise. Healthy food offers the nutrients you need to keep your brain sharp, and exercise relieves stress and boosts memory and problem-solving abilities. Aim for at least 150 minutes of brisk movement a week, and eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil.

3. Create and Stick to a Schedule

Planning is the first step in persevering. When you first get your course outline, plan for when, where and how much you will study each week, and stick to it. Make sure that your plan is realistic. You simply aren’t going to study for 12 hours every Saturday. A more realistic plan is to study for 30 minutes after dinner every night.

4. Give Yourself Gold Stars

Divide your work into sections and give yourself a small reward (such as a piece of candy or a few minutes of TV) for completing each section. Be honorable: if you don’t do the work, you don’t get the treat.
